Moving Week

June 23, 2012 in Shopping, The Home by Joe

The big move starts Sunday! The plan is tobe out of our current place and into the new place by Friday. Naturally what will probably be our busiest moving day, Thursday, and it’s forecasted right now to be 103. I shall tape ice cubes to my forehead.

The house is nowhere near as ready as we’d hoped it would be before we moved in but what ya going to do? One more month and a couple grand and we’d be in a better state. Unfortunately we don’t have another month or a couple spare thousand so move in we shall. I’m still looking forward to it even though it won’t be very comfortable for a while. One thing that will be better is not actually having to drive over to a second house to work on it. As much as it sucks to work on a home while living in it, especially the amount and scale of work we’ll be doing. It’ll just be easier it seems to tackle projects when they are staring you in the face and screaming to be made pretty again.

Basement Demo

June 20, 2012 in Basement, Bathroom by Joe

We got a lot done this past week and weekend. I won’t say it wasn’t without tons of sweat! At least three of the days we were working on the house it was in the upper 90′s. Thankfully we had a couple of fans to blow some cooler air throughout the house or I think I would have melted like the wicked witch of the west.

First off a couple of things we did before venturing into the basement.

Put a new temporary front door on the place with dead bolt. It isn’t pretty by any means but more secure at least. Oh and it’s not exactly weather tight either, but again it’s just temporary and all the plaster and lathe have to come off the walls before we put the permanent door in.

Lets Get Dirty!

Lets get dirty!

My original plan was to get the dining and living room floors ripped up back down to the hardwood and get them sanded and finished before moving in. We have 3 cats and a dog that would need to be corralled during refinishing and I didn’t want to have to deal with that. Plus we have a huge sectional that is going to be a bear to move around.

What I didn’t plan on was that the bottom most layer of vinyl tile having very very sticky gooey adhesive to deal with. I figured the glue was going to be 50 years old and scrape right up. Ooops, guess not. So what I thought was going to take a week to do has turned into probably 3 weeks of pulling and scraping. Still not even sure the original hardwood flooring in these two rooms can be saved at this point. We’ll have to wait and see how this glue comes off.

Ready or not!

June 11, 2012 in The Home by Joe

Finally! We closed on the house last Wednesday! We couldn’t wait for this day to be over and get this headache behind us. Oh wait, you actually think it went off without a hitch? Surely you haven’t read the whole blog yet. ;)   After we closed on Wednesday we had to leave town for one of my glass bead shows for 4 days. While at the show Barry got an email on Friday or Saturday letting us know the closing was null. It’s probably a good thing I was in public around tons of customers otherwise I probably would have went off on a cursing tangent. The seller had to throw one more wrench into the plans just for fun I think. They never signed any of the HUD paperwork so we still didn’t have a house. Good god! You’d think after selling off lots of foreclosures a bank would know by now how it works. Even their attorney should have known how to handle this, but of course a thumb tack has more smarts than this crew it appears.

We have to be out of our current house July 1st. When the original closing was scheduled we had over a month to get the new place somewhat livable. I envisioned this latest speed bump taking at least another week to be fixed giving us only two weeks to de-funkify the place. Luckily it was just a matter of some papers being signed and it actually got done today. Can I stop holding my breath now? I hope so! As soon as I post this we are leaving to go over to the house to start the clean-up. I hope we can get a lot done in the next 2-3 weeks. Any volunteers? :)

Now that we can start working on the house, hopefully the blog posts will get a little more exciting and have more substance. I’m sure you’ve grown tired of reading about incompetent people by now.
